J▲M: Tame Impala – Stranger In Moscow (Michael Jackson Cover)

2_TAME IMPALA_NEIL KRUG

Last weekend, Aussie psych-pop wizards Tame Impala casually chucked a cover of Michael Jackson‘s 1996 single “Stranger In Moscow” on Soundcloud. The track’s arrival might be unexpected, but its gorgeousness is no surprise. Generously doused with swirling psychedelia, comfy synth pads and layer upon layer of reverb, it’s an effortlessly superb re-imagining that sounds fresh and retro at once. Honestly, if they hadn’t put “MJ Cover” in (double) parentheses, I would have totally bought it as a new unreleased Tame Impala song.

Out of curiosity, I launched Youtube right after to check out the original, which turned out to be a beautiful ’90s relic. Then I ended up at the track’s Wiki page and found out UK duo Alpines also recorded another lovely version which was put up on their Myspace back in 2010. I’ve unearthed that and uploaded it for your convenience below. Have a listen while I lean back and congratulate myself for such a productive day.

REMIXED: Lana Del Rey Remixed By Alpines, Blood Orange

The latest Lana Del Rey remix comes from Alpines, the moody pop duo previously responsible for this great Emeli Sande remix. Their rework of her new single “Blue Jeans” follows a similar palette, with postdubstep beats and some nice piano bits. They are quite good at this remixing thing, aren’t they?

Their new EP Gold is out now on iTunes UK, including this fab Carly Simon cover.

Even though the Alpines one is not on the forthcoming remix EP (outrage!), Blood Orange‘s is and can be streamed in full now. I would describe it as something to soundtrack an ’80s movie montage.

REMIXED: Emeli Sandé – Heaven (Alpines Remix)

Emeli Sandé‘s debut single “Heaven” gets a moody rework from pop-noir duo Alpines. It’s suitably nocturnal, with a dubstep flavor. I really like it better than some of the official remixes, actually.

Emeli Sandé’s forthcoming album “Our Version Of Events” was one of my most anticipated for 2012, until PopJustice’s review got me worried. Her next single, “Next To Me”, does not wow me the way “Heaven” & “Daddy” did. Regardless, I look forward to a thorough listen soon.

Covercentric: Alpines Spookify Carly Simon

UK’s pop-noir duo Alpines have joined forces with DJ/producer Maya Jane Coles for a spooksome cover version of Carly Simon‘s 1980 hit “Why”. They managed to turn the sunny reggae-lite original into a strictly nocturnal, bass-heavy trip. Expectedly, it’s moody and dark, but still quite danceable.

There’s no word yet on whether the cover will see an official release soon, but for now, in case you’re not yet familiar with the duo’s work, start with “Cocoon” or “Drive”. Check out the video for their most recent single “Cocoon” after the jump.
